HPDI™ TECHNOLOGY

Why choose HPDI™

HPDI™  (High Pressure Direct Injection) technology is more cost effective than fuel cells in terms of CO2 reduction. HPDI™ with 40% biomethane is particularly attractive from a CO2 reduction cost perspective. Biomethane is already broadly available and its availability will grow to reach the share of 40% of total natural gas consumption in Europe, by 2030.

H2 HPDI™ fuel system equipped engines offers far greater CO2 reductions for every Euro of public and private investment, compared to fuel cells. Based on Westport’s current technology, the H2 HPDI fuel system avoids reliance on the sensitive and expensive minerals used in fuel cell catalysts and batteries, resulting in far lower cost base than fuel cells.

Our solutions

LNG HPDI™

LNG HPDI™ 2.0 consists of a fully integrated “tank to tip” solution, with a cryogenic tank and an integrated high pressure liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) pump installed in the LNG tank mounted on the truck.

H2 HPDI™

Hydrogen HPDI™ (“H2 HPDI™“) technology is a cost effective, high performance solution to support the transition to climate neutrality in the heavy-duty mobility sector.

Whether it uses biomethane or hydrogen, the HPDI™ technology delivers industry leading CO2 reductions for long haul transportation

HPDI™ with 40% biomethane delivers the same life cycle CO2 reductions as fuel cells using blue/green hydrogen blends, and can deliver zero WTW CO2 with pure biomethane.

At the heart of the engine is a revolutionary patented injector with a dual concentric needle design. It delivers small quantities of diesel fuel and large quantities of natural gas, at high pressure, to the combustion chamber. The natural gas is injected at the end of the compression stroke.

Market Opportunity

Providing GHG reductions of 20-100% on a well-to-wheel basis while preserving the same performance as a diesel engine, Westport™ HPDI™ is an integral part of the full spectrum of measures that the transportation sector will need to combat GHG emissions effectively.
